For years, Jim Cadle has brought beautiful fish to us with quiet determination – despite age, disability, and the daily grind of commercial fishing – because he loves the water and he depends on the income. His loved ones tell him every week that it’s time to stop fishing. And every week, he says no. Because for him, fishing isn’t just a job – it’s who he is. Yesterday, Jim was seriously injured in a tragic accident. While inspecting a tire issue after unloading his catch, his truck unexpectedly rolled and ran him over. He was rushed to the local trauma center, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair a torn aortic valve in order to stop uncontrollable life-threatening bleeding. Doctors have since discovered a shattered lumbar spine, multiple crushed fingers, severe fractures throughout his hand, and a condition called flail chest – where multiple ribs are broken in a way that makes breathing extremely dangerous. The broken section of his rib cage moves in the opposite direction of the rest of his chest, making every breath a struggle and allowing jagged rib fragments to damage internal structures. His recovery will be long and complex, with multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation ahead. The trauma team is now preparing a plan for additional surgeries to help him recover. This is a man who has given everything to his craft. He’s never asked for help – but now, he needs it. Jim lives alone and survives on a fixed income, while battling several disabilities. He is fiercely independent, but this accident will leave him unable to cover the mounting costs of medical care, daily living, and essential support. UPDATE 8/30/25: Jim underwent a long surgery today to repair his lumbar spine. Surgeons are hopeful that he will have full leg movement.
